Mission Statement for Theater Lunaire
Founded in October 2019, Theater Lunaire pushes the boundaries of theatre through the transformative power of mask and puppet performance. Based in Montreal, Canada, our company is dedicated to developing new plays that celebrate the diverse cultural tapestry of our nation. We collaborate with artists nationwide to create groundbreaking productions that challenge conventions and captivate audiences. Theater Lunaire cultivates self-expression through visual and theatre arts, aiming to captivate audiences with original performances blending traditional storytelling and contemporary creativity. From traditional theatres to unconventional spaces, our productions ignite imagination and provoke thoughtful engagement.
Douglas Witt, a Métis artist with over 30 years of experience in theatre, entertainment, and education, is a pioneering force in mask and puppet performance. During his tenure in Yellowknife, he served as resident mask maker at the Northern Art and Cultural Center and contributed to artistic boards including the Frozen Eyes Photography Society and the NWT Arts Collective.
Based in Montreal, Douglas leads Theater Lunaire, where he innovates new approaches to mask and puppetry. Amid global challenges, he embraces online teaching, offering virtual classes that reach a global audience. Douglas inspires others to explore masks’ transformative potential, fostering creativity and cultural understanding through the arts.
Mathieu, also known as Creaturiste in his freelance career of 22 years, has created performance tools such as puppets, masks and props for theatre productions worldwide.
Since 2019, Mathieu is the solo digital puppeteer for Héros en Classe, an online educational program for French preschools and elementary schools across Canada.
As the project grows, it will expand to serve the English community, with a team of bilingual puppeteers under Mathieu’s leadership. As an illustrator and graphic designer, Mathieu regularly improves the shows’ existing team-created content, such as visuals, sounds and educational games.
As co-founder of Theater Lunaire, he harnesses the multidisciplinary experience acquired from helping others create their dream projects for more than two decades.
